Victorian Flowers That Symbolize Negative Things

In Victorian times flowers held many properties. Flowers could have either positive or nagative traits; one famous quote from Shakespear’s Hamlet, spoken by Ophelia “there’s rosemary, that’s for remembrance.” shows how the language of flowers was used at this time. Flowers had a special connection with personal relationships. Many books on the subject of the language of flowers were published in the mid 19th centuary. Here are a selection of negative flower meanings:

  • Aloe – Superstition
  • Aspen – Fear
  • Basil – Hatred
  • Dandelion –Oracle
  • Marigold – Sorrow
  • Nightshade – Secrets
  • Sweet William – Treachery
  • Thistle – Defiance
