The Japanese Principle of Yugen: Profound Simplicity

Yugen is a Japanese Shinto design  principle that sometimes plays into Feng Shui and it often is played with when it comes to garden design. challenges the garden designer to play with the subtleties of nature (mainly the play of light against shadow) to create a motif that riffs on itself. Usually this has to do with interplay or repetition of a design or a pattern. A good example would be bamboo trees that are planted so that the shadows of bamboo leaves are reflected on other bamboo leaves. Another example would be the very still pond that is used to reflect the beauty of the garden on shore.

Indoors you could use this principle to create shadows using lamps and wall paper or using mirrors to reflect the beauty of a single motif or simple flower arrangement.
