The tradition is to place a sprig of acacia, which also goes by the names of Cape Gum, Gum Arabic and Egyptian Thorn over your bed. This is also supposed to ward off evil.  A sprig of Acacia is also worn inside the turbans of males in Eastern countries to accomplish the same purpose.

Agrimony: Is burned or sprinkled around the house to send bad spirits back to the sender.

  

Angelica: Worn on the person to protect from evil spirits, however a drawback of this herb is that it also may protect you from opportunities. Used formally in rites of exorcism to get rid of bad spirits. Brew into a tea it and sprinkle in the corners of a house to protect from evil spirits

  

Anise: Stuffed under a pillow it protects from nightmares.

  

Ash: The branches can be shaken and rattled like a wand to cleanse a place of bad energy.

  

Caraway: Carry the seeds on your person to protect from disease and ill health. A few seeds in the clothing of a loved one are said to protect your marriage from infidelity.

  

Camphor: Worn as a balm it is used to ward off physical attack or unwanted advances from others.

  

Cedar: The boughs or incense are burnt to protect the home from spirits. It also protects those in deep meditation or doing rituals from picking up unwanted energies and astral attack. It is toxic to reptiles and birds, however, so you should be careful using it if you have either as pets.

  

Coriander: Burn as an incense or wear the seeds on your person to protect against attack. Helps keep friends and lovers from accidents.

  

Bayberry: Bayberry can be bought commercially as a candle A bayberry candle burned to the socket brings luck to the home and puts money in the pocket. It can also be bought as incense.

  

Basil: Soaking basil leaves in water for three days and then sprinkling the water at your business premises is thought to attract financial success. The leaves can also be carried with you.

  

Chamomile: Washing your hands in chamomile tea is thought to bring gamblers luck. Drinking the tea is thought to bring luck and prosperity.

  

Cloves: Cloves can be burned on charcoal, tucked in a sachet or put in your purse to draw money. An ancient money and protection ritual is to stick an orange with cloves stuck on pins and hang it on a ribbon in the kitchen so your cupboards are never bare.

  

Cinnamon:  This spice that can be used ?to bring quick money, it can be bought as incense or burned on charcoal or sprinkled in a cash register or wallet to bring fast cash.

.To protect yourself from gossip or the envy of others, place a tiny dot of cinnamon on your breast bone in the morning while dressing. Sprinkling a little cinnamon under the phone, may help you get that difficult person to call you back.

As rosemary is a herb that is sometimes associated with the Virgin Mary it is sometimes seen as a feminine herb. However technically its planetary ruler is the Sun and it is considered to be masculine in nature.

  

It is another all purpose herb that is used for love, lust, increasing powers of concentration, healing, insomnia and retaining one’s youth. However it is probably most known for being one of the big cleansing herbs.

  

Rosemary is sometimes used as a smudge and burned to eliminate a space or a person of negativity. It is one of the oldest incenses and is often used to cleanse ritual spaces before magic is performed.

  

To take advantage of it’s anti-aging effects, rosemary branches should be twined and worn on the head like a chaplet.

Frankincense (Boswellia carteri) is a tree resin that is harvested from a small tree that is native to Somalia and some Arabic regions. The tree is cut which causes it to weep white milky tears. These tears harden into amber or orange drops which are then graded according to color and size and steam distilled to produce olbanimum (the ancient name for Frankincense.)

  

Although it is a holy resin that has been burned for centuries in both churches and for more pagan rituals (60 tons were burned annually for the feast of Baal in ancient Rome) it mainly produces a sexual response by stimulating certain hormones. Other studies have shown that it produces a chemical called tetrahydrocannabinol. This substance is thought to expand the subconscious so diffusing it through the air can be a bit “trippy.”

  

In addition to blowing your mind, Frankincense is also an expectorant, immune system stimulant and anti-depressant. It is an excellent treatment for asthma and nervous disorders.
