There is a lot of confusion about what birth stones match which month. That is because there are so many different tradtions. Here is a breakdown of the birthstones for each month (which are not to be confused with the Zodiac birthstones which are a different story.)

January – In every tradition and culture, including North American, Roman, Hebrew, Polish Arabic and Russian traditions the birthstone for January is a garnet. In the Hindu tradition it was a serpent stone (the only problem here is that nobody seems to know what a serpent stone is ..if you know blog me!)

February -February’s birth stone is the amethyst according the modern North American, Hebrew, Roman, Arabic, Polish and Russian traditions.  In ancient Hindu it was the chandrakanta which is another unknown stone.

March -March’s birthstone is a little less universal However in Hebrew, Roman, Arabic, Polish and Russian traditions it is the bloodstone.  In the ancient Hindu tradition it was a stone unknown to us today called gold-sivalinga. The modern tradition defines it as an aquamarine.

April - The modern North American, Hindu and Polish traditions claim the birth stone for the month of April is a diamond.  However in Roman Arabic Hebrew, Roman, Russian and Arabic traditions it is a sapphire.

May -  In modern North American, Hindu, Polish, Russian and Arabic traditions s emerald is the May birthstone. However the Hebrew and Roman traditions claim it is agate.

June – There is a little more debate when it comes to naming the birthstone for June In the modern North American tradition the birthstone is considered to be moonstone or alexandrite.  In Hebrew and Roman traditions it is the emerald. In Arabic, Polish and Russian traditions the month is ruled by agate. The Hindu tradition says the pearl rules June.

July- In North American, Polish and Russian traditions the birth stone for this month is ruby.  The Arabic culture claimes it iscarnelian to July and the Hindu religion claims it is sapphire. In Hebrew and Roman traditions it is onyx.

August -  August also has a lot of different cultural interpretations. The modern North American tradition says the birthstone is a  peridot. The Arabic and Polish traditions say the month belongs to the sardonyx. The Hebrew and Roman traditions attribute it to the carnelian. The Hindu tradition claims it is the ruby and the Russian tradition assigns it the alexandrite.

September – Modern North America claims this month ruled by the sapphire. However in Hebrew, Roman, Arabic, Polish and Russian traditions the month is assigned to the peridot.  The Hindu tradition assigns the zircon to September.

November -  The North American tradition claimes the topaz or the citrine as the birth stones.  .  The Hebrew, Roman, Arabic and Russian traditions also say it belongs to topaz. The month is assigned the cat’s eye in the Hindu tradition.

December – The North American tradition says December is symbolized by three stones: tanzanite, turquoise or blue topaz. The Hindu religion also assigns it to topaz (any color) and the Russian and Polish traditions assign it to turquoise. The  Hebrew, Arabic and Roman traditions say December is ruled by the ruby.
