Essential Oils For Migraines
Migraine headaches have multiple triggers and the severe throbbing pain is caused by excessive contraction and dilation of the blood vessels in the head. Typical triggers are allergies, stress, lack of sleep, too MUCH sleep, or emotional changes and the hormonal changes associated with pubescence, ovulation, perimenopause and menopause.
Â
The three best oils for this are chamomile, lavender and marjoram. You can add a few drops of essential oil to a compress and place on the forehead or add a few drops to a lukewarm bath. A cold diffuser is also recommended to disperse the oil through the air.
Â
If you do decide to diffuse the scent through the air keep in mind that some migraines are made worse by strong smells. Chamomile oil has the least obtrusive scent. Marjoram has a very heavy scent that is not necessarily therapeutic for every individual, however it is recommended for individuals whose migraines are caused by severe stress. Lavender oil falls somewhat in between the two. Spiked Lavender generally has a lighter presence that other kinds of lavender oils.
